Facing barriers, few in diaspora vote in Haiti’s elections

Haitians living abroad were granted the right to vote in 2011. However, few Haitian-Americans in the U.S. are aware of the privilege or want to vote, community members said. 

“I don’t believe I should have a say in the political affairs of a country I don’t reside in,” said Michel Lauture, 45, an Atlanta resident. “Considering what’s going on in Haiti now, the diaspora voting in their elections especially from the U.S. is a bad look, especially if there’s a hint of election meddling.”
